Personal Firewall: If you have a personal firewall like Norton Internet Security or ZoneAlarm, you
need to set your firewall to allow Java applets to access the internet. To do this
in Norton Internet Security, do the following. (Sorry, I don't have ZoneAlarm,
so don't know how you do it in that programs.)
·Open Norton Internet
Security
·Go to "Personal Firewall Settings"
·Select Custom Level
·Under
"Java Applet Security" select either "None - Allow Java Applets" or
"Medium - Prompt Me Each Time"
Close out of Norton Internet Security. This
should enable the chat applet to connect to the internet.
Enable Microsoft VM (Virutal Machine) in Internet Explorer. You need to have the Microsoft VM, which
runs Java applets, enabled in your browser. To do so in Internet Explorer, go
to the following:
Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom Level
Scroll
down and find the "Microsoft VM" section, and make sure "Disable"
is NOT selected. Select one of the other security level options. "Medium" will
allow the chat applet to run.
Clear Your Cache: If you don't have a firewall, but are having trouble with the Java applet, try clearing
out your cache and starting with a fresh download of the Java chat applet.
To do this (in Internet Explorer - I don't know how exactly how to do it in
Netscape, but should be similar):
1. Clear your Temporary Internet
Files cache. In IE, go to Tools --> Internet Options --> General --> Temporary
Internet Files --> Delete Files.
2. Close out of Internet
Explorer, restart internet explorer again, and go to chat (http://www.philanderers.com/chat/pf_chat12.html)
and see if you can log in and if it works.
AOL Users: Some aol users (notably those who upgraded from AOL 3 to 4) may encounter problems
loading the Java chat applet. AOL users encountering a problem are strongly
advised to contact AOL support.
MAC users. If you're using Netscape 4.7 with the Mac, there is a problem with Netscape's java
interpreter. Apple recommends using Internet Explorer and updating your Java
Virtual Machine. All the info you need is at http://www.apple.com/java.
Netscape Users. Some versions of Netscape have a java interpreter glitch that will disconnect you
from chat if you resize your browser. Workaround: get the latest version of
Netscape, or don't resize your browser when using chat. |
