"This program can be sitting on your own computer, without your knowledge, installed by anyone with access to your shared PC. It operates like a quick-clicking camera, taking a picture every few seconds of whatever is on the screen. The pictures can be played back in slide-show fashion. Spector also can record every keystroke that the user types, every syllable and space, even if the person immediately deletes them. If you type in a password to your email, it records this too. This can be played back at any time by the program. Spector can be installed overtly or in stealth mode, so that an unsuspecting person wouldn't even know it's running."

If the evaluation copy was downloaded onto your pc, it may still exist somewhere on your hard drive. It's a good place to start looking. Do a search for a file called "Spector_eval.exe" using Windows "Start" "Find" function.
Spector saves it's Data in a Directory called "WebExt"
This is the sub-directory where Spector will store the files that contain the recorded screen shots.
By default, under Windows 95 and Windows 98, this directory is set to c:\windows\system\webext. Under Windows NT 4.0. the directory is set to c:\winnt40\system32\webext.
The directory and the files will normally be hidden (unless you have set up the Windows Explorer to show hidden files). They are hidden so that someone who may wish to disable Spector will not easily find them and delete them.
To find this directory, try a search using the start menu "Find" program.
"Start" "Find" "Files or Folders"
Type in "WebExt" then click "Find File"
If that doesn't bring results, try windows explorer. Go to the directory c:\windows\system and look for a folder named webext. If it doesn't appear try right clicking the system directory, choose “properties”, and check “Hidden Files”. If the Webext folder shows up, the program was likely installed on your PC. Trouble!
If you don't find it, this doesn't mean it's not there. The user may have changed the directory.
Shift+Ctrl+Alt+S is the default “hotkey” There's a good chance that the default not been changed by the person who installed it. If you do try this and nothing comes up, that doesn't necessarily mean it's not there. The hotkey may have been changed. If, when you try this and Spector comes up.... you may already be busted. You can get rid of it immediately by going to “File” then “Uninstall”. Then start thinking about what you're going to do next if (when?) your spouse starts asking questions.
That's it! that's all I know about this program. Any of you that have something to add about this or any other snoop program please email us.
